You’ve heard it a dozen times, but few people take this warning to heart. Public wi-fi is not secure. Hackers can scan for data on your hard drive while you wait. Those trips and stalls in your connection? Those may be in response to hacking attempts on your hard drive. Never assume a trusted connection from a previous session is equally stable, secure or not suspect to credit card hacking attempts.

The solution is to plan work like writing or researching, reading or watching downloaded video in such places. Take note of individuals checking out your screen. Never conduct credit card transactions in public wi-fi environments.

Frequent spending destinations for credit cards such as fast food, gas stations, local services and stores can be secured. Casual chat over years means someone at that store knows a lot about you. They probably know where you work and how much you make, and when you are gone and what hours you leave for work and come home. If they innocently chat to a co-worker, your credit card security and identity theft risk is is in play.
